What to Pack

The following is a list of things you may like to have in your dorm room. It does not include items you may require for the classroom (backpack, pens, paper, etc.).

  • Seasonal clothing (including warm winter clothing)
  • Laundry bag or basket
  • Loonies and quarters for laundry machines
  • Slippers or shoes to wear in residence
  • Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, razor, etc.)
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Hair dryer, flat iron, shaver, etc.
  • Kleenex
  • Cold medicine, pain relievers, prescribed medications, Band-Aids, sunscreen
  • Cleaning products (paper towel, all-purpose cleaner, sponges, baking soda, etc. Toilet brushes and plungers are provided)
  • Bedding (standard size twin sheet, mattress topper, blanket, pillow, pillow case)
  • Posters, pictures, decorations, sticky tac, etc. (tape, pins and nails as well as excessive wall/ceiling coverings and live Christmas trees are not permitted)
  • Electronics (alarm clock, fan, desk lamp (non-halogen), laptop, printer, power bar, headphones, earbuds)
  • Appliances
    • Small electric kettles are permitted in residence, provided there is no exposed element and the appliance is in good working order
    • Each hall has a full-sized fridge and freezer available for residents however, you may bring a small fridge for your room if you choose (keeping a fridge in your bedroom will mean giving up space otherwise used for storage or study – it is wise to discuss this with your roommate)
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Basic dishes (bowl, mug, water bottle, cutlery)
  • Dish soap and cloth
  • Ear plugs

It is best to pack your belongings in a duffel bag or something collapsible; there is limited storage space available for suitcases or plastic totes in residence closets. Don’t try to bring everything you own, and remember that you can always collect more belongings from home during Christmas break or reading week.

Students are responsible for insuring all personal items, whether stored on the premises or in individual rooms. Students should consider purchasing renter's insurance. Some homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover belongings in a residence hall.
