Safe Walks

Safe Walks are one of the ways students stay safe at the Downtown Campus. We highly encourage students to have walking buddies especially for evening and night classes.

If you would feel more comfortable, you can request for volunteers from external organizations to join you and your walking buddies, by contact the phone numbers below:

Exchange District Patrol
204-791-3161
DCSP
204-947-3277

If you regularly need volunteers for Safe Walks from these organizations, you can fill out the Regular Safe Walks Request form, and our Help Desk will request Safe Walks volunteers on a regular basis on your behalf.

The Covenant of Community Life reminds us of our duties and responsibilities as co-owner of our Mission:

  • To steward our time, talent, treasure, body and the environment to the glory of God;
  • To exemplify the gospel of grace by upholding the dignity of, showing respect to, and serving all people regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or culture; and
  • To sacrifice our own selves for the good of the community and for the sake of the gospel.

From these principles, we derive the Providence Downtown Building Policies:

1. Noise Meter

Every room and hallway are assigned a noise meter level. Students are expected to comply with them.

2. Scent-Free Zone

The whole Massey Building is a scent-free zone. Out of respect for other people, do not wear perfume, cologne, body spray, or strongly scented lotions. Scent-free deodorants are highly encouraged.

3. Personal Hygiene

As a rule of thumb, body smell should not be distracting for other people (this includes body odor or perfume).

4. Cleanliness

Students are expected to throw their garbage at the trashcan. Pencil shavings should be thrown on the trashcan.

5. Bulletin Boards

Before posting anything on any bulletin board, you need permission from the Help Desk.

6. Stairwells and Washrooms

Stairwells and washrooms are not places to congregate with peers. Follow the maximum capacity poster posted in the washrooms. If needed, line up outside the washrooms.

7. Running

Running can be a safety hazard and noisy. Walk at a normal pace on campus.

8. Building Guests

Students can bring guests to the building. However, they are liable for their guests’ behavior, contributions, and damage to the building.

Students will be informed via their student emails and/or Populi Groups in cases of official class cancellations and/or emergency building closures.

When you see a FIRE on your floor:

  1. Set off the nearest fire alarm.
  2. Call 911 and report the fire.
  3. Use a fire extinguisher to put out small fires.
  4. For larger fires, get out of the area and close all the doors.
  5. If your clothes catch fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.

Fire extinguisher instructions:

  1. Pull the safety pin from the handle.
  2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the trigger handle.
  4. Sweep from side to side.

When you hear a fire alarm on your floor:

  • Guide students out of the nearest exit, quickly and calmly.
  • If you see the fire, back away from it.
  • Close as many doors as possible between you and the fire.
  • Wave from the window – only break the glass if you really have to.
  • If trapped in a room, place cloth material under the door to stop smoke.
  • If you are caught in smoke, get on your hands and knees and crawl. Hold your breath or cover your face with a cloth and breathe slowly.

When you get outside:

  • Go to a designated meeting place.
  • Wait and follow instructions from staff.
  • Give first aid to injured people. Do not move them.

Throughout your time in the program, the Student Services Advisor will regularly plan community building activities for you to connect with your fellow students and learn more about Canada and about Winnipeg. Please watch for communication from the Student Services Advisor regarding those events.
